Policies

Chelsea City Council has the authority to formally adopt policies that can assist in City governance.  City policies differ from City ordinances.  Before being adopted, ordinances must be read into public record twice which provides the public time to share comments and feedback.  Once adopted, ordinances become part of the City code.  Ordinances are often established for detailed procedures that require enforcement and often involve fines for non-compliance.

City policies are typically established for procedures that are more limited in scope, but also require formal adoption to help ensure adherence to an agreed-upon approach.  The process for adopting a policy can be modified as needed based on the topic under discussion.
