The Chelsea Area Fire Authority (CAFA) was organized in 1999 under Act 57 of 1988. Until 1988, the organization operated through the City of Chelsea. CAFA now operates as an independent entity and proudly serves and protects approximately 19,000 residents living in an area of approximately 123 square miles which includes the City of Chelsea and Lima, Lyndon, Sylvan, Dexter, and Waterloo Townships.
CAFA is located at 200 W. Middle Street in Chelsea. CAFA contracts with the Chelsea Police department for local 911 dispatch services and is funded through fees collected from each covered municipality, which also compose its board of directors.

City of Chelsea residents should contact CAFA for burning permits at 475-1339.
