Pension


A closed, defined benefit retirement plan exists for full-time, non-union and non-union employees hired on or before November 25, 1997 who elected to remain in that plan at the time of the City conversion to a defined contribution plan. This plan is administered through the Michigan Employee Retirement System (MERS) and benefits under the plan are provided in accordance with MERS Plan Description Summaries by Group below.

Teamsters

Employees are eligible to begin receiving benefits after age 55 and having contributed 25 years of service (F55). There are no employee contribution requirements. Benefits are vested after 10 years. Retirement benefits are calculated based on 2.25% of their final average compensation (calculated based on an average of the average of the last five years of wages), with a maximum benefit equal to 80% of their final average compensation.

Non-Union, Salaried

Employees are eligible to begin receiving benefits after age 50 and having contributed 25 years of service (F50). There are no employee contribution requirements. Benefits are vested after 10 years. Retirement benefits are calculated based on 2.5% of their final average compensation (calculated based on an average of the average of the last five years of wages), with a maximum benefit equal to 80% of their final average compensation.
